David Hobbs has been principal trumpet of the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra since 2002. His initial training was with his father, for many years the principal clarinetist of the Huntsville Symphony. David received his Bachelor of Music degree from Louisiana State University and recently completed a Master of Arts degree at Middle Tennessee State University.
His performance experience spans a quarter century with many different ensembles. In addition to being principal trumpet with the Chattanooga Symphony, he has played fourth trumpet with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra for 20 years. He has also been principal trumpet of the Nashville Chamber Orchestra and the Ohio Light Opera Orchestra. He has performed with the Baton Rouge, Meridian, Huntsville, Tuscaloosa and Alabama Symphony Orchestras and in 1983 was the winner of the Louisiana Young Artists Competition and appeared as guest soloist with the New Orleans Symphony. He has worked with conductors such as James Paul, Giancarlo Guerrero, Sir Neville Mariner, JoAnn Faletta, Kenneth Schermerhorn, Mei Ann Chen and Leonard Slatkin. In 2008 he was the guest soloist of the Chattanooga Symphony, performing the Haydn Trumpet Concerto.
He has been active in the recording studios in Nashville, a highlight of which was the recording of the soundtrack of “Hoodwinked” a major animated motion picture. For 15 years he was the solo cornetist of the Mr. Jack Daniels Original Silver Cornet Band. During this period he appeared as soloist with the Cornet Band at the International Trumpet Guild conventions in 1992 and 2004 and also in 1995 on Good Morning, America. He has worked with many well-known entertainers such as Amy Grant, Vince Gill, Martina McBride, Brenda Lee, Louise Mandrell, Pat Boone, Wynona Judd, Charlie Daniels and Taylor Swift, among others.
David is currently an adjunct faculty member at both Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee and Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee where he teaches applied trumpet.
